Thanks for Popping In!
We're Ruby and Jude, and this is our global travel blog. We may not be spring chickens any more, we're still very much on the move.
Two Sisters. One Passion.
We grew up on a farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with 3 more sisters. Our first overseas trips to France, Spain & Turkey at 16 and 17 years old gave us a taste for seeing more.
We've been traveling for 3 decades, in-between working full-time, raising kids, and embracing day to day life! Over 100 countries and counting. With grown-up kids & grandkids, multi-generational travel is a next chapter of travel for us.
During a trip to Montenegro and Northern Albania in 2022 we took the plunge and decided to create a travel blog. Why? Well, we were always being asked by family, friends and work colleagues to share our itineraries, tips and knowledge of places. So, why not do this via a blog??
Did we know how to build a website, write a blog — nope, but we have persevered and this is the result. We focus on travel in midlife & multi-generational journeys for couples, with grown up kids, grandchildren, friends, and/or siblings.

Our Early Childhood Trips
Our first holidays were family camping or caravan trips to Nairn or Lossiemouth on the Moray Coast of Scotland. These destinations were close in miles to our Aberdeenshire hill farm, but a world away — with sweeping sandy beaches, chilly North Sea waters, and loads of picnics.
International adventures in the 60s/70s were to Northern England to visit our grandparents on our Mum's side. The annual roadtrip was fun as with multiple stops, the best one at Perth for hot tomato soup.
Perth stop for hot soup 🍲Our only 'international' family holiday with all 7 of us was camping in the South of France - which probably was our introduction to decent wine. This trip showed us you don't have to spend a fortune to have an amazing time together.

Who Inspired Our Love of Travel?
Our Dad is our true travel hero. Our amazing Mum was diagnosed with early onset dementia and passed away far too soon. Dad could have spent the rest of his days sitting around but he decided to go see the world, doing several solo trips in his 70s and then group travels into his 80s. He simply loved meeting people of all cultures and sharing life stories. Our multi-generational trips with him are unforgettable!

Our Scottish Granda
Our Scottish Granda sailed from Scotland to Australia in 1953. We have an original diary recount of his voyage — six weeks to get there, including his return journey of six weeks. What an adventure that must have been!
Here he is with Granny Thomson at our Mum & Dad's wedding.

Our English Granda
Our English Granda took his first transatlantic trip at age 90 to Canada on a cross-country train trip.
Our Mum and Dad were also avid travellers as and when they could get away from the farm, and particularly loved Australia and New Zealand.

I fell in love with travel watching a TV show about Sri Lanka. Aged 20, as a business graduate, I moved to London to follow my dream of a career in the travel industry working for Wexas, an international private travel company. I had little money, limited knowledge but was determined to go there and learn everything I could. When I took my first long haul flight to New York for a city break, I loved every moment and knew the move was worth it!
Ahead of saying yes to my next job, I negotiated for a free ticket to Australia as part of the deal! Cheeky, but they said yes! After 4 years in the travel industry in London creating complex global travel itineraries for many clients I joined British Airways.
With the arrival of my 3 kids, I changed careers, teaching English. No prizes for guessing my favourite subject was Geography - any excuse to bring out my travel box souvenirs to entertain the kids!
My favorite places to explore are Asia & Europe, especially the Balkans, Greece and Italy. Adventures with my grown-up kids are such fun and it was with them that I finally made it to Sri Lanka!
Some of My Most Memorable Experiences
Watching the sunset over the U Bein Bridge in Myanmar with my Dad was really magical. It is the longest and oldest teak wooden bridge in the world and the silhouette images I captured on my camera are some of my best shots ever.
I will always remember being chased out of Colombia by bandits when we mistakenly crossed over the border from Venezuela when kayaking on the Orinoco River.
We meet wonderful people when travelling. One of our most memorable characters was our driver Ivan, in Montenegro. A drive from Kotor to the Albania border turned into a real adventure as he took us to places inland we would have never found on our own - We still keep in touch.
Taking part in the dawn Alms Ceremony in Luang Prabang, Laos was such a beautiful and humbling experience. Every day, monks are given offerings by locals and to be part of this daily ritual was very moving.
Sharing a simple meal of fish and rice, then playing a game of cards with a group of locals in a village in Venezuela was one of my first introductions to how cultures across the world. In some ways they are so different — with language barriers - yet connections can be made over food, a simple card game and a smile!
One of my personal travel challenges is finding fantastic places to stay without paying a fortune — like exploring 3 capital cities of Slovakia, Slovenia & Austria on one trip for less than £500 in peak season, including wine!

When people ask me where I live, I hesitate to answer because the reality is that I am a bit of a nomad, even in midlife. Having lived and worked across several continents, and travelled to 100+ countries, it seems impossible not find a new experience or destination that calls to me.
My first overseas job was an internship when I was 17 years old in Cologne, Germany — this experience kicked off my passion to find a way to live overseas again. That opportunity came a decade or so later and I moved to live in Alaska — that move to work in a camp in the Arctic changed my life.
My career in leading organisational change and transformation projects and HR leadership gave me so many opportunities to work in places including Central Asia, West Africa, and London. People I met over the years have become lifelong friends & its always a bonus to meet up with them around the globe.
I love learning about cultures wherever I am living or visiting, from local foods to centuries old celebrations. Everywhere I go I also try to learn a little of the language — and we both try to do a little Duolingo every day!
Some of My Most Incredible Travel Experiences
Meandering through an island footpath on the Scottish Isle of Colonsay, blissfully unaware that the ferry schedule had been changed to leave early and the next one wasn’t for 5 days — luckily these are some of the world’s most beautiful islands.
Touring the Giza Pyramids for the 3rd time with grandkids, having previously done this same thing with their Dad, and a first solo Egypt trip. Some places are just easy to return to.
Being greeted by a HUGE Silverback Mountain Gorilla who decided to get up close and personal in the Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, just before a wild forest elephant decided to charge at us. So, now I know why the guides carried AK47s!
Spending a weekend ski-ing in Georgia (the country) only to be snowed in by avalanches and eventually having to be rescued by helicopter off the mountain. Relieved until the plane back to Azerbaijan was caught in life-threatening turbulence, meaning an emergency re-direction to a remote part of the country. Quite the journey home to Baku!
Being stopped from boarding a flight when officials were sure I’d crossed overland on foot without permission from the Congo into Angola in West Africa. Really I replied, in a mix of Portuguese and English “in these shoes!!"
